The Rock Creek Mustangs hosted the Caney Cougars on its Senior Night on Tuesday. The Rock Creek boys edged Caney 52-48, but the Lady Mustangs fell 50-37 to the Lady Cougars.
Rock Creek’s Bronson Burns burned Caney for a game high 27 points in what was a tight match-up between these two teams. Lead changes happened more often than the change in Oklahoma weather.
The Cougars had a slight lead, 10-11, after the first period. Rock Creek and Caney battled it out in the second period as both teams traded buckets. With only seconds remained in second period and the was knotted at 21 apiece. Then Burns ran full court and drew the foul with only one second on the clock. He split his free throws to give the Mustangs a 22-21 at the half.
The Mustangs could shake the clingy Cougars in the third period, but held on to its one point lead, 38-37, to end the period.
In the final frame of the game the Mustangs begun to pull away, a little. It was Burns that kept Rock Creek alive as he scored 12 points in the period and led the Mustangs to a 52-48 win over Caney.
Seniors Ethan Mitchell scored seven points and Tyler Parker scored six points.
Lady Mustang senior Harlie Heflin led in her team with 18 points against the Lady Cougars.
After the first period the Lady Cougars held a 9-7 lead over the Lady Mustangs. But then the game turn south for Rock Creek in the second period.
Lady Mustangs couldn’t find their shots in the second period, but Caney was heating up. The Lady Cougars went on runs of 10-0 and 11-6 to give them a 30-13 lead over Rock Creek at the half.
The Lady Mustangs outscored Caney 11-7 in third period, but it wasn’t enough to cut into the Lady Cougars’ lead, 37-24.
Though the Lady Mustangs tried to rally, Caney kept them at bay and took home the win.
