CADDO - After a 38-point win over Achille to win the district title on Saturday, few questions remain for the Caddo Lady Bruins.
One of them could be: Will anyone stand in their way to state in Area IV? Only second-ranked Kiowa and powerful Arkoma and Dewar teams appear on the latest top 20 rankings with No. 5 Caddo. Those teams won’t face the Bruins until the area finals next week.
The Lady Bruins are heavy favorites in this week’s regional playoffs which start Thursday in Rock Creek. Caddo has drawn Smithville (17-6), a team with some quality wins but a tendency to fall hard against well-armed foes. (Game time is 6:30 p.m.)
That would describe the 20-1 Caddo team which dismantled Achille on Saturday. The Lady Bruins countered three Lady Eagles in double digit scoring with four starters following suit.
Conference MVP Ally Adair led the way with 19 points as well as six rebounds and five steals. Desiree Haugen notched another double-double, this time with 15 points and 12 boards.
Shelby Dellinger added 13, Julie Layton 12 and Tobi Miller eight for Caddo.
“I told the girls, ‘Get two more of these and you’re in Oklahoma City,’” Caddo Coach Vernon Johnson said of the district plaque. “Anytime you win in the playoffs, it’s a big thing. Rebounding and hitting free throws in the playoffs is the name of the game. And our defense has been solid all year.”
The Lady Bruins took 12 steals and while they didn’t reach the line often, they were five-for-eight from the stripe.
Kayla Wright scored 15 for Achille, Raychel Alexander had 10 and Madison Stanglin also scored 10.
Achille will face Weleetka at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in a must-win regional round game at Rock Creek Gym in Bokchito.
