Southeastern rodeo standout Katelyn McLeod will have the rare opportunity to compete in one of the richest rodeos in the country when she competes in The American at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas on March 2.
McLeod qualified for the 21 competitor field and was forced to miss the weekend’s regularly scheduled event at Garden City CC to have the opportunity to win more than a million dollars with a victory in the barrel racing event.
Winners of each event take home $100,000, while second place is awarded $25,000.
Since the events consist of the world top-10 as invites as well as a group of 10 qualifiers, a side pot has been set up that would award $1 Million to any qualifier who can win his or her event, beating the world’s top-10 in the process. A qualifier who wins their event would enter a pot with a chance at the grand prize among any other event winners that reached The American as qualifiers.
As a qualifier, McLeod is eligible for the prize.
Making matters even more interesting for the Storm rider, her mother Michele will also be competing in the event.
The elder McLeod advanced as an invitee for being ranked in the world top-10 in barrel racing.
The American consists of the top-10 barrel racers in the world competing alongside the 10 qualifiers who advanced by finishing in the top 10 at the Mesquite, Texas, semi-final which was fed by five qualifying events. The field also features one competitor invited by exemption in addition to the top-10 in the world.
All 21 competitors will have one run, with the top four, after that run, moving on to a shootout round that will determine the champion and reserve champion, with the championships decided by the shootout run and not an average of runs.
The champion will win $100,000 and the reserve champion will win $25,000. In the case that the champion came from the “not” top-10, they will place themselves in a pot for the chance to win $1,000,000.
The event will be carried on RFD-TV beginning at 1 p.m. RFD-TV is channel 231 on Dish Network, channel 345 on DirecTV and channel 226 through Mediastream cable in the Durant area. For information on where to view the event in your area, go to www.rfdtv.com.
