DURANT - The Durant soccer teams struggled in district play Tuesday night against Tahlequah at Paul Laird Field. The Lady Lions loss a in a close match-up, 2-1, and the boys team fell 5-2.
The Lady Lions record dropped to 7-5 on the season and still ranked in the OSSAA rankings at No. 9. This loss may have hurt the chances for the Lady Lions to make the playoffs. There are two games left in the season, both district games, and the Lady Lions need to, at least, split the games to possibly get in the post-season.
The Lady Lions offense struggled against Tahlequah on Tuesday. While they pelted the Tahlequah goalie with shots-on-goal, they couldn’t manage a goal. The lone score for Durant was on a corner kick from Alexus Coxsey and the ball hit a defender, bounced off and went in for a Durant score. The goal was the answer to a Tahlequah goal scored earlier in the the first half.
Then in the second half the Lady Lions begun to attack in Tahlequah’s and had good shots-on-goal, but couldn’t get it past the goalie.
Tahlequah would break the 1-1 tie at the 28:25 mark when a corner kick bounced off a Durant player and gifted Tahlequah the goal and the win.
Now the Lady Lions hit the road in a important district play against No.2 ranked Coweta (9-2) on April 18th.
Durant Lions are currently ranked at No. 14 with a record of 5-7 on the season. The Lions had trouble holding off Tahlequah’s offense and couldn’t get many quality shots-on-goal Tuesday night district play.
Tahlequah came out hot and out-shot Durant in the first half, 11-4. After Tahlequah scored the first goal of the game, Durant answered back just minutes later.
Durant was on the a breakaway and Ernesto Devora took the ball to the left of the goal and smoked the ball the past the goalie to tie the game.
Then Tahlequah took over and never looked back. Tahlequah would score to more goals before the half was done and lead 3-1.
Tahlequah would score a goal in the early minutes of the second half and lead 4-1. Then at the 23:24 mark, the Durant offense had the ball in Tahlequah’s zone and a mad scrabble in front goal would lead to a goal for Durant and cut into Tahlequah’s lead 4-2. But with five minutes left in the game Tahlequah would score again to put the game away.
Now the Durant will hit the road in a important district play against No.6 ranked Coweta (7-4) on April 18th.
