The Durant Lion junior varsity rode stellar pitching and solid defense to a doubleheader sweep of McAlester on Friday evening at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.
In the opener, the hosts rolled to an 8-0 run-rule triumph before squeezing out a 3-1 decision in Game 2, improving to 14-4 on the season.
Matthew Knox twirled four innings in the opening game, scattering three hits to pick up the pitching victory. Drew Smith tossed a scoreless fifth to preserve the run rule.
Durant raced to a 4-0 lead in the first stanza, keyed by four Buff errors along with a two-run single from Carson Campbell and single by Brody Morgan.
The Lions pushed across three more runs in the third, fueled by a two-run double off the bat of Taylor York and a final tally in the fourth when Knox walked and eventually came around to score.
York finished with two hits to lead the offensive attack.
In the nightcap, Tyler Stovall had a perfect game through three innings, striking out five. Then, Cody Jones tossed the final two stanzas of the five-inning affair, yielding a run on three hits with four strikeouts.
Durant struck first in the second inning when Morgan singled, stole second, advanced on an error and scored on a Drew Smith groundout.
Tyler Shade’s double in the fourth was the key blow as the hosts tacked on two more runs that proved to be the difference.
McAlester threatened in the fifth, scoring a run but had a runner thrown out at the plate before Jones struck out the final two batters to finish it off.
Morgan and Shade had the lone hits of the contest for the Lions.
The JV Lions will be at home again Monday night, facing Ada for their next action.
