Durant is home to some little state champions.

The Lady Lions 8-and-younger coach-pitch softball team won the OK Kids State Tournament June 29 in Preston.

The team went 17-3 on the regular season, the three losses coming from traveling teams during a seven-game trip to Oklahoma City. The Lady Lions won the league championship in Durant to earn a berth to the state tournament.

There, four of the five victories were by large margins. They defeated Clinton 15-0, Okemah 11-4, Canute 14-1 and Henrietta 14-2. Coach Tim Hampton said Okemah made a defensive adjustment for the championship game, shifting almost all the players to the left side. Hampton said that and the fact the Lady Lions didn’t hit as well in that game as earlier in the day made it a 5-2 ball game for the trophies.

The team gave up an average of only two runs in the state tourney, and Hampton gave his defense the credit. He said the tournament director told him his team was the best that’s come through there since the tourney began in 2012.

And these champs were outfitted with help from Supercuts in Durant and the Chickasaw Nation, both of which Hampton wished to thank for their contributions.
