Tuesday opened basketball season for many football schools, and a pair of locals hit the hardwood for the first time with Kingston traveling to Caddo. The Kingston Lady Redskins won the opener, 44-38, before the host boys rolled to a 55-34 win over the Redskins.

Caddo will return to action Friday with a road trip to Silo.

Girls

In a tactic that will become all too familiar for the Lady Bruins, Kingston stuck with the double team all night against Caddo’s Chelsea Reece, and held her to one first half field goal while building a 22-11 lead at the break.

Kingston’s first three baskets came on second-chance points and held Caddo to one field goal, a 3-point basket by Caroline Joines, to build an 11-6 lead after the first quarter.

Kingston opened the second quarter with five unanswered and continued on an 11-1 run. Mara Cavelier and Reece scored unanswered baskets to end the first half scoring.

Caddo brought it back within single digits after a 3-point play by Reece was followed with a steal and lay-up by Ricki Braziell to open the third quarter. Kingston followed with a 7-0 run, but Caddo worked the perimeter with seven unanswered including 3-point baskets by Chelsey Pilkilton and Allison Joines to cut the lead to 31-25 before the final period.

The Lady Bruins gave up five unanswered to begin the fourth quarter but answered with a 7-0 run. During the run, Kingston was breaking the press but coming up empty on their shots. Despite not making a field goal in the last six minutes, the Lady Redskins played strong enough defense to hold for a two-minute stretch.

Elizardo led all scorers with 17 points, while Mikayla Cooper, Alecia McGahey and Kaleigh Wilkins added six each for Kingston. Cooper also had a game-high four steals.

Reece finished with the game’s only double-double, scoring 15 with 13 rebounds. Pilkilton added seven, with five from Allison Joines, four by Braziell, three from Caroline Joines and two from Cavelier.

Boys

The Bruins opened with a 7-0 run to start the game and never trailed after taking a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Konar Hall opened the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers, and went back-to-back in the paint after a 3-pointer by Kingston’s Zack Patterson answered with a 3-pointer to give Caddo a 22-10 lead. Another 3-point basket by Kingston’s Ethan Gorrell was answered with a trey by Evan Stephens but Kingston ended first half scoring with a lay-up to trail 25-15.

Kolby Johnson opened third quarter scoring with a 3-pointer to spark Caddo on a 7-0 run, and the Bruins never looked back, holding Kingston to two third-quarter field goals.

Patterson opened the fourth period with a 3-pointer, but Stephens knocked down three 3-pointers in a 13-2 run. Stephens finished with a game-high 17 points, and Hall was the only other player in double figures with 12.

Kingston’s Deven Johnson snapped Caddo’s fourth quarter run with a 3-pointer, but the teams were only a couple minutes away from emptying the benches to give substitutes more playing time.

Gorell led Kingston with nine points, while Johnson finished with eight and Patterson added six on a pair of 3-pointers.

Johnson and Chris Eastwood scored nine each for Caddo, while Kagen Castleberry scored five for the Bruins. Eastwood led Caddo with six rebounds, while Hall added five boards and three steals and Clayton Childree added five rebounds.
