A student shot herself outside of the Silo School late Monday morning, authorities said.

Law enforcement and medical personnel responded to the school at 11:44 when the 911 center received a call that a girl had shot herself in the head with a handgun. Bryan County Undersheriff Ken Golden said the shooting happened inside a pickup and a small-caliber revolver was used.

Silo Schools Superintendent Bill Caruthers said the student was in the ninth grade.

The school was placed on lock down and parents were allowed to come pick up their children early that afternoon.

No other students were harmed and Golden described it as an isolated incident. The girl was first taken by Bryan County EMS to the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma, and then transported by ground by EMS to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Medical helicopters were not available due to the inclement weather.

Joey Seale said his office manager had heard about the incident over a police scanner. He came to the school to check on his children. Still not knowing who had been hurt, Seale said, “I just pray for their family.”

School was back in session at Silo this morning and counselors were available for all students and faculty, according to Caruthers.

“We are trying to offer support to anyone who needs it,” said Caruthers.
