Blood found on two pit bulls matched that of an elderly man who was mauled to death in April, officials said.
According to Sheriff’s Investigator Nathan Calloway, DNA tests revealed the blood found on the dogs belonged to James Hurst, 92, the victim in the case.
District Attorney Emily Redman said she was informed of the results Thursday.
Bryan County Undersheriff Ken Golden said at the time of the investigation that Hurst was working in his yard in Mead that afternoon when the dogs attacked him. No one actually witnessed the attack but a neighbor had seen the dogs bothering him earlier in the afternoon.
The two pit bulls were taken into custody by Durant Animal Control, and according to the sheriff’s office, both were euthanized recently, and the dog owners have left the area.
No charges have been filed in the case, although Redman said she will be asking the sheriff’s office for a follow-up investigation.
