OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Bryan County is suing the state Oklahoma Corrections Department over how much counties are paid to house state prison inmates in county jails.
The lawsuit wants a judge to establish steps for the state to take if it is proven that counties aren’t receiving enough money to cover the cost of housing the state inmates.
The Oklahoman reports that the state provides $27 per day to counties for each state inmate they house, plus medical and mental health costs.
Bryan County’s outgoing sheriff, Bill Sturch, says $27 isn’t enough. He says the county charges neighboring Durant $40 per day for housing inmates and that the state should pay the same.
The state’s response to the lawsuit says Bryan County hasn’t shown its costs are higher than the $27.
