CALERA – The opening round of the Calera Tournament started off on Thursday with three one-sided contests. The Coleman Wildcats opened up the festivities with a 22-0 win over the Achille Eagles.
In the second game, the Calera Bulldogs jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first inning and then added two more insurance runs in the second and third to defeat the Turner Falcons, 10-0.
Caleb Phillips put the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI triple that scored Dakota Hodge and Conner Hamilton. Riley Barton drove in Phillips with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Braxton Barton also had an RBI double in the inning as the Bulldogs batted around.
Barton scored the Bulldog’s ninth run of the game in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice RBI from Michael Trammell.
The Bulldogs ended the game in the bottom of the third with another RBI from Barton on an infield single. Phillips scored from third base to seal the deal.

Calera will play the winner of the Bennington v. Ripley game in the second round.
It was the same story, different teams, in the third and final game as the Boswell Scorpions cruised to a 10-0 victory over the Wapanucka Indians behind a stellar pitching performance from Blane Brown.
Brown threw four innings of no-hit baseball and struck out seven Wapanucka batters. The only Wapanucka base runner of the game reached on a throwing error in the second inning.
The Scorpions scored three runs in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice RBI from Logan Dill and an RBI single from Dusty Belvin.
The Scorpions padded their lead with five more runs in the third. Dill led off with a single and Preston Egan followed with a hard liner to left field that hopped over the wall for a ground rule double that scored Dill.
Belvin and Tracy Brown also had RBIs in the inning to give the Scorpions an 8-0 lead.
McKenna Pierce drove in the tenth run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double to end the game. Brown finished strong with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings.
“We got off to a good start,” said Boswell coach Alan Cartwright. “We hit some doubles and a single and got three runs in the first. We didn’t chase pitches in the third inning and our pitch selection got better.”
Brown went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Belvin went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Egan and Cameron Roberts also finished with a double and Dill had a single and an RBI.
The Scorpions will take on Coleman in the second round. Bennington and Ripley will play the final first round game on Friday at 10 a.m. The second round games will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday.
