Calera voters approved a school bond issue during Tuesday’s election while Silo voters defeated a bond for their school, according to unofficial election returns.

The $2.4 million bond for Calera Schools was approved by 77.4 percent with 489 voters voting for it and 143 voting against it. The bond will fund construction of a new gym and classrooms.

In Silo, a $2,350,000 bond to build new classroom facilities and renovate old ones failed. Although it received 55.7 percent with 799 voters casting ballots for it compared to 635 opposed, a bond requires a “super majority” of 60 percent.

Calera Superintendent, Gerald Parks said that the school appreciates the support of the community in getting stared on the project.

“We are so excited and so happy” he said, adding that he is excited to get to work on the project.

This bond will provide the school with a new gym and four new classrooms attached to the new gym.

The gym is to be located next to the new Early Childhood building and match it in aesthetics. Having the new gym and classrooms will allow Calera Schools to separate its junior high and high school students.

Silo School District rejected its bond for $2,350,000 yet again. The bond received 55.7 percent of the vote, not enough to win the super-majority it needed to pass.

This is the third time the bond has been rejected this year. Silo Superintendent, Bill Caruthers, said they came up a little short but for the first time the bond won at every election box but still did not receive enough to get the 60 percent vote needed to pass the bond.

“We’re disappointed but our need has not gone away.” said Caruthers. Caruthers said the school will try again as many times as needed to pass the bond. He said he feels the kids are worth it and their need is only getting more critical.

Silo’s bond would have allowed it to build a new Agriculture Education building and convert the old Ag Ed building into a new Jr. High building.

It would have also allow the school to build a new 4^th and 5^th grade center and establish a PK and Kindergarten in the existing 5^th and 6^th grade building.

Election returns will not be official until certified Friday.
