CALERA – Ashlyn Cooper and Taylor Pickett delighted the home crowd with a combined 35 points in a 59-56 LadyDawg victory over Silo on Monday in the Bryan County Tournament.
The speedy Calera team led throughout the game, except for a brief moment late in the fourth when the Lady Rebels tied it up. The game winner was on a Cooper coast-to-coast three point play.
“When Ashlyn got the ‘and-one,’ that was the turning point,” said Calera Coach Lachelle Brown. “The girls just stuck to the game plan and never wavered from it. It was a great all-around effort. I think we are peaking at the right time.”
Calera (11-7) will take on Caddo (11-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bloomer Sullivan Arena in the winner’s bracket of the tournament. Silo (11-9) will play Boswell (6-13) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, also at the BSA on the campus of Southeastern.
The LadyDawgs started with a 4-0 outburst and led 18-9 before the Lady Rebels got within three. Calera built their lead in the second quarter on hot shooting from the perimeter, even as Silo’s Kenslie Stanley slashed her way inside the paint for seven points.
A 19-12 second quarter favoring Calera gave the home ladies a 37-27 halftime advantage.
The third quarter saw Silo collect eight of their 13 points from the free throw line. But Calera kept the momentum with Kaylee Ervin hustling for a pair of offensive boards to give her teammates extra shots.
The effort paid off, as Raylee Rogers hit a pair of free throws to extend the LadyDawg lead to 12 at 45-33. Pickett was quiet until the final minute of the third, rattling off four points which were partially answered by a three from Silo’s Riley Newton.
Newton missed three good looks to start the fourth, but Hannah Bourne scored six points to help Silo get within three points. A pair of late turnovers by Calera set up another Newton trifecta, then Rachel Grider tied the game 55-all at 1:59.
That’s when Cooper went the distance and drew the foul to complete the rally. The teams traded free throws and Calera took a three-point win as Silo missed some last looks at the basket.
For Calera, Taylor Pickett finished with 19 points, Ashlyn Cooper had 16, Micaela Curtman turned in 10, Raylee Rogers had nine and Lynsie Patton scored five first-quarter points.
For Silo, Kenslie Stanley had 19, Hannah Bourne scored 15, Rachel Grider added 13, Riley Newton scored six and Kara Felton added three.
