An investigation by the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office into two burglaries led to burglary charges being filed against two men.

Dustin Wayne Harris, 24, and Jerod Michael McCollough, 22, both of Durant, have been charged with two counts of second-degree burglary.

They are accused of burglarizing Randal Copeland’s home on Old Highway 70 and also Trevor Matlock’s residence on Bryan Road. Deputy Joey Tucker began investigating after Copeland told him that someone kicked in a door to the home and stole a television, video game system and a guitar. The victim had video surveillance at the home that was reviewed by the deputy. Later that day, Tucker took another burglary report from Matlock, who said someone entered by breaking the glass on the back door. A Remington Model 870 shotgun was stolen.

The investigation led to a Timber Ridge apartment, according to the affidavit, and Tucker along with Deputy Billy Sprouse, with assistance from the Durant Police Department, went to the apartment to question the tenants. Officers smelled an odor of marijuana when a man opened the door, the affidavit states, and another man was smoking from a glass pipe. Officers began to clear the apartment and inside a bedroom, Tucker observed a television and video game system that matched the description of those stolen.

A man identified as Harris called a cell phone and when Deputy Sprouse answered it, Harris said he would come to the apartment, the affidavit states. When he arrived, he admitted to the burglaries, according to the affidavit.

Harris, the affidavit states showed Tucker a closet and pointed to eight guns and black safe he said was stolen.

Several days later, McCullough was also arrested at Timber Ridge Apartments.

According to the affidavit, McCullough stated he went inside one of the houses. Another suspect was named in the affidavit, but he had not been charged at press time.

Durant police officers have investigated a couple of residential burglaries during the past few days.

Dana Overton told Officer Jared McCreary on Saturday that her residence in the 100 block of East Mulberry Street had been burglarized. Stolen were two shotguns, a rifle, Xbox, IBM Thinkpad lap top, compact discs and DVDs for a loss of $1,200.

Officer Brandon Mitchell was dispatched Sunday to the 5800 block of Remington South Circle after Dannie Mitchell discovered that seven bottles of medication had been stolen. According to the report, someone entered the residence through a window while he was asleep.

Mitchell later took a juvenile suspect into custody and recovered the medication.

In other news, a hay baler started a grass fire Tuesday one-quarter mile west of Hat Powell and White Rock roads, according to the Durant Fire Department. Firefighters were dispatched at 1:03 p.m. to assist the Caddo Fire Department in putting out the fire.
