A Calera man was critically injured after crashing his pickup Sunday morning, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Steven Harris, 50, was flown by medical helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas, Texas, where he is being treated for massive injuries.

According to the patrol, Harris was driving his pickup southbound at 9:50 on Highway Highway 48 north of Todd’s Circle when his truck left the roadway to the right and overturned one-half time. The pickup then slid approximately 30 feet. Harris was pinned inside the vehicle.

Harris was not wearing a seat belt, according to Trooper Mike Green’s report. The Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Bryan County EMS, Durant Police Department and Durant Fire Department assisted at the scene.

The cause of the crash and the driver’s condition at the time is under investigation.

In other news, Calera was pummeled with high winds during a storm that blew through Monday afternoon. According to Durant/Bryan County Emergency Management, high-speed, straight-line winds hit the town, causing damage to structures, car ports and power lines. This is the second time recently that Calera has been hit with a windstorm.

Durant firefighters responded to a bedroom fire at 2:08 p.m. Monday at 1222 E. Cedar St. When they arrived two minutes later, they discovered a plastic container of clothes on fire. The fire also damaged a closet door. The occupants told firefighters they did not know how the fire started.

In other fires, improper disposal of a cigarette was the cause of a fire that burned a 523 S.E. First Ave. home Friday afternoon, according to Durant Fire Chief Roger Joines. When firefighters arrived at that fire, flames were coming out of the front door and a window on the east side. James Lunsford, the tenant, said he had been gone about an hour and upon returning, the house was on fire. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 damage to a house worth $25,000, according to the fire department.
