The occupants of a vehicle that went off the road Wednesday and overturned in a ditch were buckled in the upside down car when first responders arrived, according to the Durant Fire Department.

The crash happened at approximately 7:50 a.m. east of Durant on Highway 70 just west of Hickory Hollow Road. When firefighters arrived, LaDonna Joy Pair, 38, and her 12-year-old son were still strapped in their seat belts.

Firefighters used emergency extraction tools to open the doors so they could free the occupants. The boy walked up the hill when he was freed and his mother was placed on a stretcher. They were taken to the hospital for observation, although they did not have serious injuries and were reported to be fine.

The road was closed for 44 minutes until authorities cleared the scene.

Also Wednesday, Durant firefighters responded at 5:19 p.m. to a Dumpster fire at Shamrock Bank on Shamrock Lane. Firefighters put out the fire and returned to the station at 5:35.
