TULSA - So close.
The Durant Lions were 5 minutes away from advancing in 5A Regional Tournament play in Tulsa on Friday against Noble. With 5:02 left in the game, the Lions were up on Noble 40-37. Then Noble went on a 16-to-4 run and ended Lions season with a 53-44 loss.
It was game full of excitement. Durant and Noble fought like it was the last game of their lives, neither team could pull away from the other for three and half quarters.
Durant opened up the game with the hot hand and busted out with 7-to-4 run. Cole Hughes hit a 3-pointer at the start, Blake Wilson and Zac Cater both had a bucket. Then Noble got back into game with 5 unanswered points. Durant’s Tyler Stovall put the Lions on top again with back-to-back 3-pointers. However, in the closing minutes Noble grabbed a 14-13 lead.
Cater led all Lions in scoring with 12 points, Stovall had 8 points, Cole Hughes had 10 points. Wilson, Will Engle and Skye Lowe had 4 points apiece.
Durant jumped out to a 21-16 lead to begin the second period. Then Noble bounced back and tied the game at 21 with 1:20 left before the half. With time running out, Noble made a bad pass and Cater stole to ball and passed it to Skye Lowe. Lowe would put up the shot and it fell at the buzzer to give the Lions a 23-21 lead headed into the half.
Both teams came out the half with cold shooting, but the Lions held onto it’s lead. Neither team could pull away as the both teams scored 9 points in the quarter. The Lions led 32-30 headed into the last period.
The lead would change three times in the fourth quarter. Hughes began the fourth period a bucket, then Noble rattled off 5 unanswered points and grabbed a 35-34 lead. Durant would hit back with a 6-to-2 run and led 40-37 with 5 minutes left. Then the unthinkable happen. Durant couldn’t make a shot for 4 minutes and the Noble ran away with the win.
