Broken Bow, Ok. - The youth-laden Durant Lions battled strong into the fifth inning before falling to a veteran Broken Bow squad, 9-1, in their first road outing of the season on Friday night.
Junior southpaw Brandon Maynard did a sensational job of holding the Savages in relief before having to be lifted to start the fifth stanza with a critical district start slated for Tuesday.
The Savages then cashed in on wildness by Lion relievers to push across eight runs on four hits and four free passes.
“Our kids did a great job of battling tooth and nail with them through nearly five innings.”said head coach Ron Norman, “They threw their ace and we were able to put together some pretty good at bats against him after one time through the order.”
“Brandon did a real good job on the mound for us and we could have left him in to finish the game but we had to have him ready to start on Tuesday in the district game against McAlester. We just have to have other guys step up and be able to come in and throw strikes for us in relief roles.” said Norman.
The Savages took advantage of early wildness by Durant starter Dylan Stevens, who walked five and was charged with a run in the first two innings, before giving way to Maynard. The Lion ace yielded one hit and struck out four over three stanzas.
Durant finally broke up the no-hit bid of Broken Bow ace Hunter Neal with two outs in the fourth as Alex Brooks and Stevens smacked singles before Seth White reached on an error to score a run that tied the score at 1.
The Lions managed just three singles the rest of the way on hits by Brandon Robison, White and Carson Campbell.
Reliever Zack Lively ran into immediate trouble in the fifth issuing a pair of walks, hit batsman and error for four Broken Bow runs. Austin Joines then came on to allow four unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
The Lions return home on Monday to host Idabel with the junior varsity slated to start at 4:30 with the varsity to follow at the Multi-Sports Complex.
Junior Varsity:
After spotting Broken Bow a 3-0 lead, the Lions exploded for 18 runs over final four frames to notch an 18-5 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Durant tied the score in the second as White opened with a double followed by doubles from Riley Hendrix and Maynard. White chipped another run-scoring double in the third that plated Campbell, who had singled.
The Lions broke a 4-4 deadlock with a run in the fourth after two Broken Bow errors and a Tyler Stovall single.
Durant then put it away with a 13-run barrage in the fifth stanza. Campbell and Ryan Boehme led the way with two-run singles while Hendrix also chipped in two RBI double. Derek Penz also had a single and two runs batted in during the frame.
Alex Brooks fired three solid innings on the mound with Cooper Webb and Penz tossing one frame apiece.
Maynard finished with three hits in the contest while Campbell, White and Stovall all ended with two each.
