FORGAN — Forgan High School’s brawny football team was simply too much for Victory Life Academy in the first round of the Oklahoma 8-man Class C playoffs Friday.
The Bulldogs finished the game with a 328-93 edge in total offense en route to their first playoff victory since the 2003 campaign, beating the Eagles 46-0.
“We were more physical than them,” said Forgan head coach Doug Bowles, who has coached the 8-man game at both Forgan and Buffalo. “They had athletes. They were more of a finesse team. They threw the ball a lot.”
Class C 10th-ranked Forgan improved to 7-4, with wins in three of its past four contests. Victory Life finished 5-5, its second season playing under the rules of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.
Forgan will play at Covington-Douglas (also 7-4) next Friday in the Class C quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Covington-Douglas is the fourth-seeded team in District C-2.
“Forgan’s just a big, physical team,” said Victory Life head coach Tim Wigington. “They’re bigger than us. We played our hearts out. We had to fight for everything. We just couldn’t stop them. They were hard to block and it was hard for us to pass or run.”
This game went pretty much as scripted, with Victory Life relying on its passing game.
Unfor-tunately, Eagles’ senior quarterback Jake Nichols threw a season-high three interceptions.
Forgan’s defense did plenty of good things.
Miguel Ordoñez intercepted two passes, returning one 43 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter that got the ball rolling on a Bulldog 34-point half.
Dusty Armstrong also picked off a pass. Andy Fox and Tanner Jones, the difference-making nose guard who returned from injury, recovered fumbles as Victory Life produced five turnovers in all. The Bulldogs also deflected six Eagles’ pass attempts, with Matt Morris having three of those.
“We moved Miguel outside wide to cover the flat,” Forgan defensive coordinator Jim Henry said. “We knew they wanted to run our corners off them, so we put Miguel out there to cover that. He was able to help the corners deep. And having Tanner back was a big deal for our defense.”
The turning point occurred late in the second quarter.
Victory Life was driving toward a potential score, which would have cut Forgan’s 12-0 lead in half, or maybe a little more.
Nichols hooked up with teammate wide receiver Jacob Dupree on what would have been a 40-yard TD pass down the far sideline.
However, the Eagles’ offensive line was called for a hold. Emotions got the best of the Victory Life sideline as two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were whistled against the bench.
That transformed a would-be score into a whopping 3rd-and-55 at the Eagles own 30-yard line.
“We had that touchdown called back and that changed the game for us,” Wigington said. “It was frustrating.”
Meanwhile, Forgan played like an energized unit, coming off a stellar 32-22 victory at Boise City the week before. And the Bulldog offense showed it.
Quarterback Rhett Radcliff accumulated 194 all-purpose yards passing and running with three touchdowns including a 10-yard TD strike to twin brother Ryan with 9:01 left in the fourth quarter. He scampered for TDs from 22 and 34 yards out.
Ordoñez was also a factor on offense, rushing for 97 yards on 14 carries and a TD. Morris, the former Liberal High School athlete, punched in a TD from 1 yard out and Dusty Armstrong bolted off left end on a 41-yard TD run in the third quarter.
“We had a lot of success,” said Bowles. Rhett Radcliff’s 34-yard TD run with 4:41 to go in the fourth quarter induced the 45-point mercy rule, which was an unexpected outcome according to Bowles. “We didn’t expect to win 46-0,” the coach said.
“The offensive line did a great job. All of them blocked well and held their blocks. Aaron Hall, Angel Torres and Tyler McReynolds, all of them worked hard.”
Radcliff’s 22-yard score took place less than three minutes into the contest.
In the end, hard work paid off for everybody in the form of a Forgan playoff victory.
