Durant woman dies in accident; child critically injured

Senior staff writer

DURANT - A woman was killed and her 3-year-old son critically injured Thursday evening after her car crossed the center median and collided with two vehicles.

Nicole Elizabeth Norwood, 21, Durant, was dead at the scene of the 7:23 p.m. crash, according to Durant Police. The accident happened on U.S. 69/75 between Choctaw Road and the Sunnyside overpass.

According to police, Norwood was northbound when she crossed the center median into the southbound lanes and struck another vehicle. Her car then careened into another vehicle.

Norwood's car was broadsided on the passenger side.

The boy, whose name has not been released pending notification of his father, was flown from the scene by helicopter to a Dallas, Texas, hospital. Police said he is in critical but stable condition.

The driver of the first vehicle struck by Norwood's car, Sriram Kunderu, Lincolnshire, Ill., was taken to the local hospital to be treated for minor injuries, according to police. The other driver, Dustin Schaefer, Cisco, Texas, was not injured, and drove himself from the scene.

Southbound traffic was backed up for miles until the highway was reopened two hours later. Durant firefighters responded to the crash and used an emergency extraction tool. They also helped clean debris off the highway.

The crash is still under investigation and a report has not been completed. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is assisting. The cause of the wreck is unknown.

Funeral services for Norwood are pending with Brown's Funeral Service in Durant.
