The past few days have been busy for firefighters who have put out several structure and grass fires.

Durant firefighters were dispatched at 4:07 a.m. today to a residence at 516 N. Third Ave. and when they arrived, flames were coming out the front door and a window.

According to a fire department report, firefighters put out the fire on the front of the house and then made entry into the house.

The fire was contained to the living room, hallway, bathroom and rear bedroom. The kitchen and other bedroom had extensive heat and smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Additional information on the fire was not available at press time.

A dryer was the cause of a fire that burned a mobile home Friday afternoon at 4053 N. Sawmill Rd. When firefighters arrived, the west end of the home, owned by Malisa Buckner, was on fire. The people at the home told firefighters the dryer was making a noise and then caught on fire.

The home was a total loss, according to the fire department.

In other fires, firefighters put out a grass fire Sunday at 980 Lake Durant Rd. Firefighters were dispatched at 3:30 p.m. and when they arrived six minutes later, the fire had burned approximately four acres and was getting close to homes. They brought the fire under control in about a minute, according to a department report, and they used approximately 200 gallons of water to hose it down.

They responded to another grass fire at 12:58 p.m. Sunday at South McLean and Rodeo roads. That fire was almost out when firefighters arrived and they sprayed 20 gallons of water on it. Also Sunday, firefighters were dispatched at 4:54 p.m to a rubbish fire at 501 S.E. First Ave. When they arrived, they found a pile of trash and wood chips on fire. They sprayed about 250 gallons of water on it. The cause of the fire was not known.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating fires that destroyed several mobile homes and an RV late Friday evening and Saturday morning in Cartwright. The fires are considered suspicious.
