CALERA — Boswell traveled to Calera to open the basketball season and left with a sweep Tuesday. The Lady Scorpions never trailed after taking an early lead and finished with a 51-31 decision. The boys exchanged big runs and big leads throughout the first three quarters, but Boswell pulled away from the Bulldogs for a 69-57 win in the nightcap.

Boswell will not play again until Tuesday with a road trip to Bennington. Calera will play in the Achille festival Friday.

Girls

Defense carried the game early, but Boswell’s Josie Redwine ended the first quarter with a pair of 3-pointers that lifted the Lady Scorpions to a 10-5 lead.

Boswell opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run that included a deep ball by Kaitlyn Crawford, but was snapped with Calera’s first back-to-back baskets of the game after a drive by Malinda Steve and dish from Steve to Mariah Dunn.

Boswell led 21-12 at the half and then got a big lift in the third quarter from Shay Love, who poured in 11 of her game-high 22 points in the frame. The Lady Scorpions led 37-21 at the end of the period and were never threatened in the fourth quarter.

Steve finished with a team-high 15 points and added seven rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs. Dunn followed with eight points and six rebounds, while Candace Rodriguez chipped in four. Madison Holder added a fourth-quarter basket, while Alyssa Baddle and Macie Baskin rounded out scoring with a free throw each.

Redwine was the only other player in double figures, knocking down three 3-pointers on her way to 13 points. Kelbie Brinkley had a solid game in the paint for Boswell, finishing with five points and eight rebounds.

Boys

Blame the Scorpions for setting the game’s frenetic tone early. Boswell opened on a 12-0 run, but was then outscored 15-3 by Calera in the last six minutes of the first quarter. Ben Robison led the way for the Bulldogs with a solo 7-0 run to snap Boswell’s opening run.

Calera then opened the second quarter with nine unanswered points that was capped by back-to-back baskets in the paint by Austin Hartman. Calera led 27-19 at the half.

Momentum switched back to Boswell in the third quarter. The Scorpions began to get open looks in transition and outscored Calera 18-7 through the first six minutes and ended the period on an 11-0 run.

Trey Phillips scored Boswell’s first seven points of the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer that gave the Scorpions the largest lead of the night at 58-39 with just over five minutes to play.

Calera clawed back when Cameron Tennison began knocking down shots, scoring 12 points during a 12-2 run that he capped with a four-point conversion. The trey and foul shot cut Boswell’s lead back to 62-55 with 73 seconds left in the game, but Boswell scored the next five points while Calera went without a field goal until the last 17 seconds. By that point, Boswell has built a 12-point lead and was able to seal the win at the charity stripe.

Boswell’s Phillips led the scoring with all of his game-high 20 points coming in the second half. Markell Henderson finished with 19 points eight rebounds, while James Ribera had the game’s only double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bradley Snow came close with 10 points and nine rebounds for the Scorpions.

Robison and Tennison each scored 16 to lead the Bulldogs. All but four of Tennison’s points came in the fourth quarter. Cody Mullens finished with nine, while Tyler Davis and Hartman each scored seven, and Steve Dudley rounded out the scoring with a fourth-quarter basket.

At Coleman

Girls

Silo teams opened the season with a sweep, as the Lady Rebels opened with a 43-31 win over Coleman and the Rebels cruised 62-29 over the Wildcats. Silo will have its home opener Friday, hosting Caney.

Silo opened with just a 14-7 lead in the first quarter, led 25-14 at the half and ran away by outscoring Coleman 11-4 in the third quarter.

Torrie Wright and Brittney Burns led Silo with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Kinslie Stanley added six and Jordan Bacon finished with five.

“We played hard, played well, rebounded the ball real well but missed a lot of easy shots,” said Coleman coach Jeff Counce. “Silo’s a good team. They shot the ball real well outside ... shot better than I’ve seen them shoot in a long time.

“We got into early foul trouble and went to a zone, but they knocked down shots. We had a lot of unforced turnovers like walking and double-dribbling, but Silo’s a good team. They’re going to beat a lot of people.”

Bethany Loudermilk led Coleman with 14 points, while Stormy Golden added eight and K.J. Daniel finished with six.

Boys

Silo opened with a strong defensive effort and built a 28-5 lead at the half. B.J. Burns led the Rebels with 17 points, while Trey Johnson was the only other player in double figures scoring with 12. Logan Oller added eight and Garrett Childress finished with six.

Coleman was led by Wheeler with six points. Burns also led Silo’s rebounding effort with seven total.

At Eagletown

Rock Creek opened the season with a sweep of Eagletown. The Lady Mustangs won 58-50 before Rock Creek edged out a win, 63-60.

Boys’ coach Brad McKnight wasn’t pleased with the effort to start the game and ended up calling for a global substitution early. The junior varsity bunch did a solid job hanging with Eagletown, trailing 34-27 at the half.

“More than anything, my guys have got to learn to mentally prepare themselves to play,” said McKnight. “We started about three minutes into the game but it was too late, but we’ll get it.”

Eagletown’s Jaron Stafford led all scorers with 30 points. Rock Creek was led by Blake Allen with 21, and Skyler Hawkins finished with 12. Tra Allen led the effort off the bench for Rock Creek, grabbing nine rebounds.
