A Friday afternoon fire heavily damaged a home, according to the Durant Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched at 4:15 to 523 S.E. First Ave. after someone called and said the house was on fire. When firefighters arrived one minute later, they observed, that a porch area of the house was fully engulfed in flames that went from the ground up into the roof.
The temperature was approximately 105 degrees while firefighters were fighting the fire.
Firefighters brought the fire under control in 14 minutes, according to a department report, and they remained on the scene until 5:55. The fire was contained to one area of the house, although the rest of the structure suffered heat, smoke and water damage.
According to the fire department, the occupants had left the home to go to the store and when they returned, the house was on fire. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to a house worth $25,000.
James Lunsford was the occupant of the house and Bobby Watkins owned, it, according to the fire department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
