What’s that? You say basketball starts this week for non-football schools. I’m going to slow you down right there, Bryan County. Everybody knows you’re basketball crazy, but I’ve got news for you.

We stand at the front lawn in front of the porch steps leading to the door of football history, folks. A bit creepy, but it’s almost like we can see through a crack in the window shade. There is a legit shot, that for the for the first time ... ever, all three county football teams can enter the playoffs in the same year. That’s Durant, Victory Life and Caddo for those of you keeping score at home.

This is of course, somewhat qualified by the fact that VLA hasn’t been playing football for very long, and is in only its second year of the OSSAA, but I don’t care. If all goes well in Week 10, Bryan County can establish itself as a football community. Deal with it.

The Lions are in the same boat as last year. Their playoff begins in Week 10. Win and they’re in. Lose, and it’s the Ardmore Tigers’ turn. A lot of underclassmen were able to deal with the emotions of perennial power Carl Albert and put together a stunning first half Friday. A similar effort will be needed for an equally desperate Ardmore team.

A huge win for the Eagles. In C-2, Temple clinched first with a 7-0 district record. Tipton is currently second at 6-1. Thackerville is 5-2, followed by Corn Bible and VLA, both 4-3. Now, play along and safely assume a VLA win over Grandfield (0-9, 0-7) in Week 10. In that case, if the top two district teams Temple (vs. Corn Bible) and Tipton (vs. Thackerville) take care of business, the Eagles will place third because of the head-to-head over Thackerville.

VLA could wind up fourth if Thackerville wins and Corn Bible loses, but would be out if Corn Bible wins and Thackerville loses. Keep in mind: Upsets aren’t out of the realm of possibility with Thackerville playing for home field and Corn Bible fighting for its playoff life.

As for Caddo’s district B-2, Ryan clinched first with a 7-0 record going into Week 10. Fox, Caddo and Alex are each 5-2 and Allen is just outside at 4-3.

Fox has a huge game with Allen in Week 10. Caddo and Alex end the season with teams near the bottom of the district. If Alex, Fox and Caddo all win it goes to district tiebreaker points for second place, and Fox has too big a lead over the Alex and Caddo to not finish second. If like we did with VLA, we’re going to assume a Caddo win, the Bruins are second with a Fox loss to Allen.

How gratifying would that be for coach Randy Hitsman and his squad? Caddo went from winless two years ago, to missing the playoffs last season (6-4 in 2008) and losing a fourth-place tie on a head-to-head loss. Yeah, we realize it’s out of their control, but to think that they could go from the cellar to a home playoff in two years. That’s a major accomplishment for any program.
