The starters for Kingston and Velma-Alma played to a virtual draw Thursday at Velma, and coaches from both football teams identified bright spots, as well as areas for improvement.
The Kingston Redskins and Velma-Alma Comets each scored twice with their first teams, and the Redskins posted another touchdown with their reserves in the final scrimmage before regular-season play gets underway Friday.
Velma-Alma coach Greg Gothard liked the improvement his team showed after the first scrimmage.
“For us, it was just coming out with some intensity and being ready to play, and we did that,” Gothard said. “Our offensive line played better and protected our quarterback better. And our quarterback, Tyler Richardson, did a good job — he didn’t throw every ball perfectly, but he made good decisions. And the linebackers looked better this week.”
Kingston coaches had been pleased with the Redskins’ overall performance in the first scrimmage against Healdton, and saw improvement this week. Assistant coach Red Rutherford liked the intensity the hard-hitting Redskins brought.
“They played hard — they really did,” Rutherford said. “They’ll come up and strike you. We need to play more consistently, and we still have work to do, but that was a good effort.”
The Comets got into the end zone first on an eight-yard run by Cody Matthews. The Redskins responded with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jared Hayes to Paden Hayes. The Comets scored again on a deep pass to the corner by sophomore quarterback Richardson (receiver’s name unavailable).
During the second-team drills, Cameron Lewis got into the end zone for Kingston, and the ’Skins managed to keep V-A out of the end zone.
The final varsity score came during four-down drive drills, when fullback Dalton Blankenship scored on a short run.
In the eighth- and ninth-grade scrimmage, KIngston scored five touchdowns, with Velma-Alma scoring once. Kingston scores came on runs by Clayton Hodges, Josh Jones, Paden Hayes and Jackson Beal. The final touchdown came on a pass from Hodges to Hayes.
Friday, the Redskins’ varsity squad will host another group of Comets, this time the ones from Dickson. Velma-Alma will host Comanche.
