ACHILLE — Colbert squads left with a road sweep after visiting Achille Tuesday night. The Lady Leopards topped the home team 50-26, while the Colbert boys handed the Golden Eagles a 57-33 loss. Achille will be at Coleman Thursday, but Colbert will not play again until after the Thanksgiving break.
Girls
Colbert’s Mercedes Jones had game-highs of 14 points and eight rebounds along with three steals and two blocked shots for a sturdy all-around performance. Achille’s Carolyn Steelman scored the first nine Lady Eagles’ points, including back-to-back baskets that gave Achille an early 4-1 edge.
Colbert answered with a 9-0 run and led 18-8 at the end of the first quarter after a couple of 3-pointers by Taylor Reeve. Steelman opened second quarter scoring with a foul shot, but Jones sparked a 13-0 run as the Colbert defense didn’t allow an Achille field goal in the second period.
Colbert led 31-9 at the half, but Kayla Mitchell led Achille with nine of her total 10 points in an effort to outscore Colbert 14-9 in the third quarter. Marissa Williams opened the fourth quarter with a short jumper that cut Colbert’s lead back to 15 points, but the Lady Leopards sealed the win with an 8-0 run that lasted until the last two minutes of the period. Achille went without a field goal the final seven minutes of the fourth quarter.
Steelman led Achille with 12 points, while Mitchell was the only other player in double figures with 10. Tara Andrews added nine for Colbert, while Morgan Wright added eight points and five rebounds. Williams and Ervin each added a basket for Achille, while Reeve and Padyn Knickle finished with six and five, respectively, for Colbert.
Colbert’s scoring was rounded out with a basket each by Jacee Bennett, Taylor Lyons, Logan Carbaugh and Katherine Hair.
Boys
It was a balancing act for both teams, with scoring being spread around in the nightcap. The first seven Colbert baskets were scored by six different players, with Chase Love leading the way with five points to help the Leopards to a 15-7 lead in the opening quarter.
Achille’s Hunter Redden ended the first quarter with a 3-pointer and added four more in the first two minutes of the second quarter to keep the Eagles within single digits until the final three minutes. Colbert ended the half on a 7-0 run capped by a Matt Washer 3-pointer that gave the Leopards a 31-15 lead heading into the lockerroom.
Colbert outscored Achille 15-8 in the third quarter with nine from Lance Maness. Maness ended up with a game-high 13 points and grabbed five steals. Colbert’s Richie Cameron was the only other player for either team in double figures with 10 points.
Redden led Achille with seven points off the bench, while Cole Caughern, Jeremy Gunnells and Ethan Peebles scored six each. Max Owens and Cory Carl rounded out Achille scoring with four each.
Colbert’s Love and Nathan roach scored nine each, with six from Washer and four by Josh Nuncio. Steven Reese, Easton Cardenas and Kyle Winnett scored two each for Colbert. Winnett also had three rebounds and five steals off the bench.
At Boswell
Rock Creek split conference games at Boswell Tuesday, with the Boswell Lady Scorpions winning 56-43 in the opener before the Mustangs edged the Scorpions 53-48 in the nightcap.
In the girls’ game, Boswell opened up with a 15-8 lead in the first quarter and led 26-18 at the half. Rock Creek outscored Boswell 19-17 in the third, but could only manage six fourth-quarter points.
Boswell’s Shay Love led all scorers with 23 points, and Josie Redwine added 15. Devyn Johnson led Rock Creek with 17, and Jade Graham added 16 as the only other players in double figures.
Halie Heflin and Desiree Langley scored four each for Rock Creek, while Taylor Robinson and Raylee Mitchell finished with two each.
For the boys, Rock Creek was led by Blake Allen and Zach Goolsby with 17 and 14, respectively. Boswell was led by Markell Henderson with 17 and James Ribera with 12.
