A Kenefic man is accused of trying to break into the Durant Police Department’s impound lot.

Jason James Merritt, 37, has been charged with attempted second-degree burglary after police said he attempted to break into the Durant Police Auto Impound Lot on South Fifth Avenue.

He was arrested earlier this week when Sgt. Jesse Petty and Patrolman Rick Ford responded to a burglar alarm at the Three Valley Museum. Petty deployed his K-9 dog, who alerted to the south side of the alley. Petty saw a man and told the person if he did not show his hands, the dog would be released.

The man, identifed as Merritt, was arrested, and he said he did not set off the alarm at the museum and was not trying to burglarize it, according to the police report. He said he was attempting to break into the police impound yard and that he had noticed the old police department building was vacant.

The report stated that Merritt said he intended to break into the impound lot to look for wiring or other metal he could sell for scrap. He told police that he was homeless and stealing to obtain money to make ends meet.

In other crimes, Dwoodson Fredrick Fuller, 28. Okmulgee, was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison with the last five years suspended. He was found guilty last month during a non-jury trial for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Fuller was charged in September 2011 after a traffic stop by Calera Assistant Police Chief T.J. White. According to an affidavit, White could smell and odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and during a search, bundles of marijuana that weighed a total of 10.58 pounds were found.
