DURANT — A McAlester man authorities said hopped off a train to commit church and pawn shop burglaries in Calera has been sentenced to a jail term.
Colton Rex Ray Upchurch, 19, pleaded no contest this week to two charges of second-degree burglary and one charge of knowingly concealing stolen property. He was given a seven-year sentence with all but 180 days in jail suspended.
Upchurch and his juvenile brother were captured Aug. 6 while Calera Police were investigating the burglary of the 69 Pawn Shop. Police received a call that morning about suspicious activity in the area of South McKinley Street, and the younger Upchurch was arrested.
Following a brief manhunt, the older Upchurch was captured and officers recovered six handguns they said had been stolen from the pawn shop.
The Texhoma Cowboy Church on Chickasaw Road had also been burglarized and Sheriff’s Investigator John Bates questioned Colton Upchurch. According to an affidavit, Upchurch confessed to burglarizing the church and stealing a black bag and chips.
An affidavit states the Upchurch brothers got on a train at McAlester and jumped off at Calera.
The juvenile is being handled through the juvenile court system.
