MCALESTER — Durant teams didn’t escape McAlester with a win Tuesday night, as both the Lady Lions and Lions fell to 0-2 on the season. The Lady Lions dropped the opener 50-29, while the Lions fell 69-39 in the nightcap.
Durant will play its first games at home in the Durant Lion Classic beginning Thursday. The boys open against Dallas Skyline at 5:40 p.m. followed by the Lady Lions against Denison.
Girls
McAlester never trailed in the contest, but didn’t pull away until the second half. Kaley Hughes knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the lead to 13-12 early in the second period, and Taylor Richards knocked down a short jumper with 50 seconds remaining in the second quarter, but the period ended with four unanswered from McAlester.
Momentum stayed with the Lady Buffaloes after intermission. McAlester opened with six unanswered and held Durant to one field goal, a jumper from Kaylie Baxter, and McAlester led 35-20 entering the fourth period.
Durant’s Hailey Elrod opened fourth quarter scoring with a 3-pointer before a basket underneath by Lyndi Barrett cut the score back to 35-25. The Lady Lions added only one more field goal in the last five minutes with a basket off the offensive glass by Hughes.
The Lady Lions shot just 22 percent from the field, and McAlester ended the game with eight unanswered.
The Lady Buffs were led by Shay Griffin’s 21 points, while Allison Eales added eight. Barrett and Hughes scored eight each to lead the Lady Lions. Baxter finished with six points and a team-high six rebounds. Richards added four with one each by Savanna Riffe, Shaina Crites and Dylan Delozier.
Boys
McAlester opened the game with a 7-0 run and built a 17-5 lead after the opening period. Josh Barrett and Sammy Raven had Durant’s only field goals of the first quarter and Spuds Cook added a free throw.
After a pair of free throws by McAlester to open the second quarter, Raven and Barrett scored back-to-back baskets to cut it to 19-9, but the Buffs answered with a 12-0 run and never looked back, ending the half with a 34-16 lead.
Durant was held to three field goals in the third quarter, with five points by Tra Williams and a late fastbreak basket by Barrett.
The Lions outscored Durant 15-14 in the final frame. McAlester’s David DeGiacomo led all scorers with 13 points, while Calvin Boyle and Clif Smitherman scored 10 each for the Buffs. Durant was led by Cook with 12 points, and Barrett was the only other player in double figures with 10. Raven finished with six points, Williams five, Brandon Bennett three and two each by Daylan Green and Matt Lockhart.
