CANEY — The Lady ‘Frogs of Mill Creek escaped with a 39-36 win over Caney on Thursday to start the basketball season.

Sophomore Kira Head scored 14 to lead the Lady Cougars and Makaela Mahana added 12, but Caney could not overcome a 20-point outburst from Julie Underwood of Mill Creek.

“Nerves hit us early. We had 19 turnovers in the first half,” said Caney girls basketball coach Jackie Dollarhide. “We only have one starter back from last year. So I’ve got a young team, but they work hard and they are improving.”

Caney took an early 9-1 lead before a 13-2 Frog run put Mill Creek ahead for good in the second quarter. The Lady Cougars went cold on shooting and never quite recovered.

In the third, Mahana crashed the boards well and Larisa Heard came alive for six points, but Mill Creek found their three-point stroke to keep the heat on Caney.

Kira Head scored seven of her 14 in the fourth, pulling the Lady Cougars within three on a baseline jumper. Caney had several chances to get within a basket or better in the final minutes.
