CALERA — Six stolen handguns were recovered Friday following the arrest of two McAlester teenagers who hopped off a train and burglarized a pawn shop, according to Calera Police.
At 10:43 a.m. officers were taking a burglary report at the 69 Pawn Shop when Assistant Police Chief T.J. White received a call about two suspicious males in the area of South McKinley Street.
According to Police Chief Don Hyde, White captured a 15-year-old boy and the other suspect ran east carrying a black bag. Hyde requested assistance from other agencies and Achille Police, Colbert Police, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, U.S. Marshal’s Office, Bryan County Sheriff’s Office and Durant Police responded to the scene.
Police set up a perimeter and the suspect, later identified as Colton Upchurch, 19, the younger boy’s older brother, was seen coming from a tree line south of A Street, according to Hyde.
He was arrested at approximately 11 a.m. Hyde said that OHP Trooper Michale Rodriguez of the patrol’s special operations division, and his K-9, found the black bag.
It contained four handguns, according to Hyde, and two more pistols were found after Upchurch told authorities were he hid them.
Hyde said the suspects got on a train and hopped off in Calera where they entered the pawn shop early that morning through an air-conditioner vent. A parent was called to pick up the younger suspect and the 19-year-old man was booked into the Bryan County Jail. Hyde expects him to be charged with second-degree burglary and knowingly concealing stolen property.
Hyde credited other responding agencies with helping make the arrest.
“I want to express my appreciation to all agencies that came to our assist,” he said. “If they had not answered our request, the capture would not have been possible. It just all fell into place.”
