A 2-2 record in the Lone Star Conference North softball championship series here over the weekend wasn’t helpful, but it was by no means fatal.
Coach Ron Faubion’s club is 50-11 overall and dropped from fourth to seventh in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll released Wednesday.
As expected, the LadyStorm traded places — again — with Angelo State in the South Central Region rankings.
Southeastern is now second in the region with Angelo State climbing back into the top spot.
The Lone Star Conference still has six of the Top 10 in the region. Abilene Christian (42-11), which nipped Angelo State (41-8) to win the Lone Star South Division, is No. 3 with Midwestern State (31-17) at No. 7, West Texas A&M (33-17) at No. 8 and Texas A&M-Kingsville (32-22) at No. 10.
Nebraska-Omaha (38-12) is No. 4, Central Missouri (32-10) is No. 5, Missouri Western State (43-8) is No. 6, and Emporia State (36-13) is No. 9.
Southeastern remains the only rated team in both the NFCA and Division II regional polls with as many as 50 victories.
Regional assignments will be known sometime Monday and Southeastern still has a chance to host.
As always, much of it will come down to politics and that usually produces some strange bedmates.
SOUTHEASTERN had scheduled a scrimmage with Oklahoma City University here Wednesday afternoon, but the weather drowned it out.
OCU is a national powerhouse in the NAIA. The 2009 record is 45-7 and that’s good for seventh nationally. California Baptist tops the poll with a 50-4 mark.
Coach Phil McSpadden is in his 22nd year as head coach at OCU. His teams won national titles in his first three years with a total of eight overall. His current record at OCU is a whopping 1,169-280.
SOUTHEASTERN IS first in fielding and pitching in the Lone Star Conference.
SE has 1,295 putouts and 462 assists while committing 56 errors for a .971 fielding percentage. Midwestern is next at .966 on 939 putouts, 266 assists and 42 errors.
Southeastern boasts a team earned run average of 1.56, largely on the strength of Marge Johnson’s 0.83 ERA. Marge is 23-5 overall.
Jami McAdoo is at 2.01 with a record of 18-3, and Amanda Tanner is at 2.52 with a record of 9-3.
Second best is Angelo State with a team ERA of 2.68.
SE is sixth in team hitting at .309 with West Texas A&M (.339) leading the way.
Individually, shortstop Bailey Mathes is first in hits with 80 and runs batted in with 66. The Storm slugger is in a 3-way tie for third in home runs (16), along with pitcher Johnson. She is second (144) in total bases.
Johnson is what you might call a runaway leader in strikeouts with 381. Kingsville’s Courtney Rigamonti is a distant second with 229.
