RATTAN – Boswell and Rock Creek rebounded from tournament opening losses, winning baseball games on Friday and setting up a Saturday showdown at the Rattan Fall Classic.
On Thursday, Boswell dropped a 5-2 decision to Wright City. Tracy Brown had a double and scored a run in the game.
On Friday, the Scorpions edged Fort Towson 2-1 in a defensive dandy. Neither team scored until the sixth inning, which saw all three runs cross the plate.
“Our offense is struggling right now,” said Boswell Coach Alan Cartwright. “We’re throwing the ball well and pretty good on defense. If we start swinging the bats, we’ll be pretty competitive and give somebody some fits.”
Preston Egan struck out nine in a two-hit outing on the mound. Dusty Belvin and Tracy Brown singled in the sixth, and both scored on a Tiger error.
Brown had two hits in the game, and McKenna Pierce also collected a double. The split gives Boswell an 8-6 record on the fall baseball season.
Meanwhile, Rock Creek lost to Haworth 8-0 on Thursday, setting up a Friday match against the Rattan junior varsity squad. The Mustangs took a 9-2 lead into the final inning and a Ram rally fell just short, giving Rock Creek a 9-8 win.
“We didn’t play very well, but that’s what is good about baseball,” said Rock Creek Coach Kyle Wingfield. “We had a chance to run-rule them and we couldn’t get it done. We caught the ball well early on, and I thought Dakota (Jackson) threw the ball well.”
Jackson struck out six and also had a single and two RBIs. Zach Cook, Dave Dill and Sawyer Halcomb all had two-hit afternoons, while Derek Cheek scored twice and Alec Fuller crossed the plate once.
The Mustangs held a 3-2 lead into the fifth inning, then scored six runs before the JV Rams recorded an out. Bronson Burns had an RBI single to complete the scoring.
In the seventh, Rattan loaded the bases early and scored six runs on a series of walks and a hit batsman as Jackson ran out of gas. Wingfield brought in Zach Cook to close the game, and he issued a walk and two base hits before getting a strikeout and a ground out to end the game.
