COMMERCE, Texas — The Savage Storm women will have their hands full on Saturday.
Southeastern will look to build on the momentum of a Monday 91-90 win over OCU when they visit the “Field House” and take on Texas A&M-Commerce.
Game time is 2 p.m. Saturday and this is a good chance for Savage Storm fans to visit their team on the road: The 75-mile trip is the shortest roadgame on the schedule by far.
And there is plenty of intrigue ahead of this game. While Southeastern improved to 1-2 on the young season by picking up their first win this week, the Lions have only played one game so far.
It happened to be a 19-point win over Southern Arkansas - a conference rival of the Savage Storm - on Nov. 14. A&M-Commerce junior forward Breanna Harris poured in 30 points and grabbed 15 boards in the 76-57 win.
Harris is from Mansfield, Texas, and was part of the Summit High School team which took down Brittney Griner’s Nimitz Cougars in the Texas 5A championship a few years back. Griner is a 6-8 senior at Baylor, part of last year’s historic 40-0 championship.
So, Harris has some experience in the post, but Southeastern’s 5-11 sophomore Haley Schaefer is up to the task after her impressive performance on Monday.
Southeastern has four players averaging double digits in scoring: Breanna Small-Peppers (14.5 ppg), Schaefer (11.7), Ronay English (11.3) and Bailey Welch (10.0).
