A pair of double-doubles by Savage Storm volleyball players went for naught Tuesday as Southeastern dropped its ninth straight game in three sets to Central Oklahoma.
Megan Kunkel had 13 kills and 12 digs,hitting .278, while teammate Emily Gentle recorded 13 digs and 11 kills as the Storm distributed the stats around the roster. Marina Dias had 14 assists and eight digs and fellow setter Madelynne Cera racked up 15 assists. Taylor Benner had 14 digs while Ariel Sanders who set a personal season-best with 11 kills on the evening with a .240 hitting percentage.
Kunkel and Taylor Allison had one service ace each, but as a team the UCO Bronchos out-aced Southeastern 5-2. But Southeastern’s eight service errors to just one for UCO hurt the home cause.
The frustration was compounded at Bloomer Sullivan Gym as the Storm dominated the first set until the final two points. They led by as much as seven points mid-set until the Bronchos chipped away and tied it up at 18-18. SE would still go ahead late but at 23-22, UCO scored three straight to deflate the Savage Storm.
The home team never recovered and fell 25-19 in set two and 25-20 in set three despite a ferocious rally in the final frame.
Southeastern is now 2-18 on the season with just 12 games to go. Tuesday’s contest against UCO (7-11) was non-conference, so the Storm keep their 1-5 GAC mark which puts them in conference tournament consideration over winless Henderson State (0-6).
Storm volleyball will have three road games next, starting Friday in Magnolia, Ark., against Southern Arkansas (13-4 overall and 6-0 in GAC). The schedule lightens up considerably after this task. Southeastern’s next home volleyball action is on Oct. 19 when Ouachita Baptist will visit Bloomer Sullivan Gym.
