A thunderstorm boomed into the county Monday for the last day of summer, dropping rain and causing power outages.
“It was a pretty good little thunderstorm,” said Marlin Blankenship, assistant director of Durant/Bryan County Emergency Management.
The first storm rolled in before 8 p.m., bringing thunder and lighting with it. Lighting flashes lit up the sky multiple times. A second storm moved in at approximately 10 p.m.
According to Blankenship, there were 50-mile-per hour wind gusts in the Bokchito area, but he was not aware of any damage. Power was knocked out at University and Washington, and areas north and west from that intersection.
Electricity was out for approximately two hours.
“We had a few pockets of some small, pea-sized hail, some small wind gusts and lots of heavy rain,” Blankenship said.
Today is the first day of autumn.
In other news, a child hit by a car late Sunday afternoon was not seriously injured, according to a report by a patrolman. Officer Jason Colvard said a 6-year-old child ran out in front of a vehicle traveling on Harmony Drive.
The driver was able to slow down so that his vehicle was barely moving when it hit the child, according to police. The child was knocked down and suffered minor scratches to a foot and arm.
Police said speed was not a factor in the accident.
