The annual City of Durant’s Fall Trash Off and Recycle Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13. Participants will meet at 8:45 at Market Square on North First Avenue in Durant.

Upon arrival participants will be given bags, gloves, hand sanitizer and designated routes. Participants may also designate their own routes.

Trash collected will be taken back to Market Square at 11:30. After the pick-up, hot dogs and drinks will be given to all participants.

Larry Mitchell Durant’s Solid Waste Department said, “We make sure everyone gets something if they come out.”

Recyclable items such as tote-bags and recycled pencils are given out to participants.

Prizes will also be given after the pick-up for most unique items found. Mitchell said that there is usually a variety of item found from shoes, clothes and toys to car parts.

He said that the event usually has anywhere from 60 to 120 participants and 300 to 500 bags of trash are collected.

The spring pick up has more people show up said Mitchel, but the one in the fall averages 50 to 60 participants. He said he hopes to get the community and the kids involved in cleaning up the city.

Parks are normally reserved for families or groups with children such as churches and boy and girl scouts.

Mitchell said college groups also help frequently. Fraternities and sororities often join the Trash Off.

Also at the Trash Off, a stand for recyclables will be set up. Items accepted are cardboard, newspapers, magazines, aluminum cans, medication bottles, cell phones, plastic bottles and ink cartridges.
