Tushka boys, girls down Calera in close matchup

CALERA - Lane Faulkenberry rained five three-pointers on the Bulldogs as Tushka defeated Calera 54-49 on Friday to move to 3-0 on the basketball season.

Faulkenberry finished with a game high 18 points. Conner Hamilton led Calera with 16.

Tushka managed a slim 7-6 lead after one quarter, and led 16-10 in the second before Dakota Adams and Conner Mulkey sparked a 5-0 Bulldog run. The Tigers held a 23-19 lead at the break.

Tushka opened an 11-4 run in the third, fueled by steals and textbook up-court passing. They outscored Calera 21-12 and led 44-31 after three.

Jonathon Diamond scored eight of his nine points in the fourth to help the Bulldogs claw back to within one point of Tushka. Tyler Black had a chance to tie the game late, but late turnovers doomed the Calera comeback.

Adams finished with eight points, Tanner Davis had five, Mulkey, Black and Preston Barkley each scored three and Riggin Rogers had two. For Tushka, Garrette Wall scored eight, Jody Moreland had seven, Rusty Moore scored six, Wyatt Daniel five and Devin Tomlinson and Isaac Cooper scored three apiece.

On the girls side, Tushka outlasted the Lady Bulldogs 41-38 in a fesity defensive showdown. Kelsey Chambers and Morgan Moore scored 10 each to lead the Lady Tigers.

Calera started the game with a 5-0 run and looked poised to take control. But Tushka tied the game 12-12 after a quarter. Calera led 25-23 at the break and held Tushka to zero field goals until the final minute of the third.

Calera led 30-27 after winning the third 5-4 in a defensive battle, which manifested in forced turnovers and hustling jump balls.

Logan Carbaugh and Chambers opened a 6-0 fourth quarter run to give the lead to Tushka, but the Lady Dawgs weren’t done. Taylor Pickett (team-high 10 points) stole the ball and scored to tie the game at 35, then Ashlyn Cooper (nine points) completed a 5-0 Calera run to get the lead back at 37-35.

Morgan Moore tied the game with a pair of Tushka free throws, then Raylee Rogers (nine points) went 1-for-2 at the line for a 38-37 Calera lead at 1:24.

The teams swapped turnovers before Chambers was sent to the line and hit the two free throws which gave the Lady Tigers the lead for good at 22 seconds. Pickett missed a close shot with 15 seconds to go, and Tushka’s Katelyn Cook ended the game with a layup in the final seconds.
