CARTWRIGHT — Bryan County District No. 1 workers have hauled off more than 15 truckloads of rubbish deposited at a lot on Boat Club Road in Cartwright in conjunction with the countywide trash-off held Saturday.
District No. 1 County Commissioner Monty Montgomery said the trash pile was 15 feet high and covered half the width of the lot.
“There are half a dozen mattresses and there is a commode sitting there,” Montgomery said. “There are lot of unusual things.”
Workers were still busy hauling the trash Monday afternoon. A worker at the scene said 16 loads had been hauled off. A massive pile remained and trucks were still being filled that afternoon.
Some items that were still salvageable were picked up by citizens, proving that one person’s trash is another’s treasure.
A box of eight-track tapes was among items recovered.
During last year’s trash off, about 15 dump truck loads were hauled off, and again this year, citizens were encouraged to bring in their rubbish.
“I would rather keep it there (on the lot to be hauled off) than have them dump it on county roads,” Montgomery said.
