DURANT — Local law enforcement were dispatched Friday at about 10:30 p.m. to the 900 block of West Cedar Street in regards to a shooting.

According to Durant Police, William Sherer was shot in the head, and flown to the Oklahoma City area. He was released from the hospital Saturday.

Officers were told that the suspect, James Cangro, shot the victim in the head and took his wallet before leaving the scene.

The Bryan County Special Response Team served a search warrant on the suspect’s house in Calera, but he was not there. The investigation is still ongoing.

Cangro has an extensive criminal history for assault and drugs, police said, and he contacted authorities Sunday and said he wanted to turn himself in. He was arrested without incident and is expected to be charged following a review of the report by the Bryan County District Attorney's Office.

In other crime news, police are encouraging businesses to check the checks they receive carefully due to a rash of counterfeit check cashings.

Officers captured counterfeit check culprits last week after they tried to pass fraudulent payroll checks at Miller’s Short Stop.

According to Durant Police, the checks were bogus payroll checks from Potter’s Sausage and the security feature on them did not work. One suspect was captured on foot and the other following a traffic stop.

Police also arrested another woman at First United Bank on University after she tried to cash a counterfeit Potter’s Sausage check.

Lt. Carrie Wyrick said 15 fraudulent checks that were thrown on the side of the road have been turned in to police.

Businesses should check the security features on the checks to verify they are valid.
