DURANT — An employee of Allied Stone was killed Thursday after he was hit by slabs of granite that broke loose.

According to Durant Police, two employees were attempting to move several slabs of granite when the granite split and several pieces fell onto Wayne Lee Powell, 59.

Police, firefighters and Bryan County EMS were dispatched at 8:45 a.m. to the business located at 2201 W. Arkansas St.

Powell was dead at the scene from a head wound. Firefighters removed the slabs of granite from the victim.

Funeral services for Powell are pending with Coffey-Murray Funeral Home.

In other accidents, an Ada woman was flown from the scene of a 7:18 p.m. rollover crash Thursday on Highway 48 two miles south of Kenefic.

Deena Cantrell, 35, is in stable condition at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Oklahoma City, where she is being treated for leg, arm, head and trunk injuries, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

According to the patrol, Cantrell was southbound in a sport utility vehicle when she drove off the right side of the road, came back onto the roadway, overcorrected and rolled seven times.

Cantrell was wearing a seat belt. According to Trooper Mike Green’s report, Cantrell being distracted by a cell phone was the cause of the crash.
