SMOKE ENVELOPS a firefighter as he sprays water on the remains of a burning house on Lemonhill Road Monday afternoon. The cause of the fire that destroyed the home is under investigation but appears to be accidental.
A family lost their home during a fire Monday near Colbert and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The house, located at 2277 Lemonhill Road, was fully engulfed when Colbert and Calera firefighters arrived. Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 1:22 p.m. Thick, dark smoke could be observed from miles away and it enveloped the nearby road.

Authorities at the scene said no one was home at the time of the fire, but the owner, later identified as Steve Wilson, arrived when the house was burning.

The center of the home had collapsed before firefighters arrived, according to Calera Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief Brian Norton. Calera firefighters supported Colbert with water supply and manpower to battle the blaze.

Achille and Cartwright firefighters supplied tankers.

A state fire marshal agent arrived to investigate and Colbert and Calera firefighters assisted.

Calera Fire Marshal Rodney Forbis said the cause of the fire appears accidental but it remains under investigation.

In other fires, a vacant house at 104 E. Texas Street in Durant burned early this morning. Firefighters responded at 3:57 after a passerby called, and when they arrived two minutes later, the south side of the house was burning and flames were shooting out of the attic.

According to a Durant Fire Department report, the fire started in the area of the front door and spread to the attic. A cause of the fire was not disclosed, although it is of suspicious origin due to the house not having utility services.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 4:30 a.m. and left the scene at 5:13 a.m. The fire caused an estimated $20,000 damage to a home worth $30,000, according to the fire department.

Ten acres were burned south of Robin Drive in Durant Monday evening. Firefighters were dispatched at 6:41, and, according to a department report, the fire started in a rubbish pile.

Firefighters also put out a small grass fire on the side of the road early Monday afternoon at Washington Avenue and Carl Albert Drive.
