A win is always good, but it’s not always pretty. The Savage Storm women proved that axiom in a 73-58 decision over winless Southern Arkansas on Thursday.
What is pretty: The basketball team’s first win streak of the season. Southeastern improves to 4-7 after posting a pair of victories this week – albeit in different years. The Savage Storm started the week by defeating Oklahoma Wesleyan 77-73 on New Year’s Eve back in 2012.
This game was sluggish and plagued by poor shooting nearly from start to finish. A whopping 49 free throws were shot between the two teams, with Southeastern going 23-31 from the line and Southern Arkansas 11-18. Forty fouls were called, and there were 48 turnovers (22 on the Storm).
The Lady Muleriders were 20-58 (34.5 percent) from the field, while Southeastern fared a little better at 24-54 (44.4 percent).
Emily Williams led Southeastern with a game-high 17 points. Haley Schaefer added 12, while Taylor Richards and Cheree Kiser had 10 each.Ronay English and Breanna Small-Peppers had seven points each, while Bailey Welch and Natalie Ruud had five each.
Southeastern out-rebounded the Lady Muleriders 43-33 by committee, with five Storm players grabbing four or more boards. Williams topped out the list with seven.
The Savage Storm women held a slim 33-26 lead against SAU (0-10 this season) at halftime. They outscored the Lady Muleriders 40-32 in the second half, but didn’t put the game away until the final minutes.
A pair of highlight-reel reverse layups for Richards and a close-range basket for Kiser gave Southeastern a 62-50 lead at the four minute mark.
The ladies of the Savage Storm move to 2-3 in the conference ahead of a 2 p.m. Saturday game against Arkansas-Monticello (2-7, 0-4 GAC). The game will be held at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
