Local artist Kathy Sturch, who recently won the American Indian Heritage Month Poster contest, also placed third in the Choctaw Indian arts show and sale with different painting.
Sturch’s works are done largely in watercolor and Pastels. Sturch entered her painting entitled “A Father’s Influence” in the competition at the Choctaw Labor Day Festival.
The painting is to be on display at the Choctaw Tribal Complex. According to a comment Sturch posted on her page on Facebook, the painting is based off of “an old photo of her father and brother.” The figure on the right represents her dad’s heritage.
Both of her pieces that have won recently focused on the Choctaw practice of oral tradition and passing down stories from one generation to the next.
To win in the Choctaw Indian Art Show and Sale, Sturch had to provide documentation of Tribal membership. The show is judged by three judges.
Among these judges this year were Choctaw artist and radio host D.G. Smalling, Native American gallerist and appraiser Linda Greever and Senior Heritage Technician Olin Williams.
