Close to 100 people attended a Second Amendment rally in Durant on Saturday.
The rally was organized by local members of the National Rifle Association. It was held on the Bryan County Courthouse lawn.
Stewart Hoffman of Durant passed out a letter he authored to the chief executive officers of nine firearms manufacturers in seven states inviting them to relocate to Durant.
“It’s painfully obvious that ambitious and hypocritical left-wing politicians are trying to drive your companies out of business and take away our personal freedoms in order to further their own political agendas,” he wrote. He said these efforts to put gun manufacturers out of business “are the result of their sinister agenda to deprive law-abiding citizens of our God given right to keep and bear arms, and defend ourselves against tyranny or anarchy.”
“Should Barack Obama’s intimidation campaign become successful in the state you are presently located in, we gladly invite your companies to relocate to Durant, Oklahoma, the heart of the reddest section of our Union,” Hoffman wrote. “You cannot find a more politically conservative area in the United States.”
Similar relocation invitations have been issued by Mississippi and other so-called “red states” this week as a reaction to gun control discussions by the Obama administration possibly targeting manufacturers. The nine companies listed by Hoffman are located in three New England states, North Carolina, Colorado, South Dakota and Arizona.
