On Thursday, a Flag Day celebration was held at Three Valley Museum in Durant. During the celebration, the Woodmen of the World dedicated the American flag and Oklahoma flag in memory of the late L. D. Harp, a former member of the Woodmen of the World.

Greg Phillips, Three Valley Museum Board Chair, and Nancy Thrasher, of Lodge 558, welcomed the audience and James Thrasher, of Lodge 558, delivered an opening prayer. Pat Metheny, of Lodge 558, talked about Woodmen of the World and their flag project, and spoke about how Flag Day came to be celebrated in the United States.

She also recited ‘I Am The Flag.’ Wilma Wright, of Lodge 558, delivered the dedication of the flags and told the audience a little about the history of the Oklahoma flag. Members of the Durant Fire Department unfurled the flags and members of the Oklahoma National Guard led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance and Oklahoma Flag Salute.

Curator Nancy Ferris directed the crowd in singing the National Anthem and ‘Oklahoma,’ and Rev. Ross Kervin gave a closing prayer. Ferris told representatives from Woodmen of the World, “Your unselfishness to do this for us means the world.” Mayor Jerry Tomlinson and Durant City Manager James Dunegan were present to celebrate the festivities. Guests were invited to enjoy cookies and punch and peruse the museum before and after the ceremony.
