Durant ISD Board of Education named a new board member and announced the year’s president and vice-president during the board meeting Monday March 4.

Judge Mark Campbell swore Mr. David Jones into office #3 on the Durant ISD Board of Education. Dan England was named president and Tammy Cross was named vice-president of the board.

The board also recognized five Durant ISD employees during the meeting who have been “instrumental in saving lives,” said Superintendent Jason Simeroth.

Teresa Sneed, Sharon Moore, Karen Castor, Cheryl Smith and Rachel Shelton were all recognized and thanked for their parts in saving student lives.

The board also heard a presentation by the Vision Academy in which they were shown art projects the students have been working on and told how these project have helped student develop.

Two overnight out-of-state trips were approved during the meeting.

One student and two sponsors will be traveling to Dallas for the ACDA National Honor Choir and Conference on March 13 through 16. Simeroth said that this student was the only one to qualify and the board wants to encourage him.

DECA students will be taking a trip to Anaheim, California, for the National DECA Competitive Events in April 23 through 28.

“One of the things we love to do is celebrate success,” said Simeroth.

Two donations to the school district were recognized as well. Robert E. Lee Elementary received $500 from the Durant Fire Fighters Local 3061.

Jim L. Ely donated $500 to the Durant High School Athletic Hall of Fame as well. The board also approved the resignations of eight district employees and the hire of three new employees.

Resignations were received from high school science instructor Kathy Chambers, Clerk Joni Bliffin, band assistant Anthony Tiger, Washington Irving teachers assistant Elisabet Garcia, Northwest Heights teachers assistant Shelly Ford, custodian Gayle Dollar and child nutrition workers Wendy Robinson and Amy Robb-Kegg.

Kevin Head will be hired as a teacher’s assistant at Washington Irving Elementary. Taylor Olive will be hired as a graduate assistant track coach at Durant Middle School.

Max Roberts will be hired as a transportation employee. The board also added three names to its substitute list and renewed several employee contracts for the 2013-2014 school year.
