Families Feeding Families Fed residents all over Bryan County Thursday to raise money and awareness for the organization.

FFF was at the Bryan County Community Building on South Ninth Avenue serving taco soup, corn bread and dessert for the price of a donation during its first “Empty Bowl Project.”

No limit was set on the donation and guests only had to give any amount they wanted to give. A silent auction was also held.

The auction closed at 7 p.m. and winners did not have to be present to receive prizes. FFF President Cathryn Phelps said the organization decided to have this fundraiser because they have seen a decrease in donations and rise in need recently.

Phelps said the organization feeds people who can’t find work, elderly people, children and even several working families who just can’t make ends meet.

“This is just our way of giving back to the community and raising money at the same time,” said Phelps.

Phelps said that all funds raised go back into Bryan County to help people locally.

“Families Feeding Families belongs to Bryan County and it takes the entire county to keep it going,” said Phelps.

Among the Volunteers helping the organization yesterday were the students from a vo-tech culinary class, Victory Life mission groups and the Durant Young Professionals Group.

“One of the goals of the Young Professionals is to engage in the community,” said Young Professional Sara Jane Smallwood.

Smallwood added that engaging in the community meant helping organizations in the community such as Families Feeding Families.

Phelps said this is the first of many years for the Empty Bowl Project. She said the project will be held the last Thursday of February every year.

“The same time, same place, every year,” said Phelps.
