A father and child escaped from a burning home after the child saw that it was on fire, according to the Durant Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched at 1:03 a.m. Sunday to 709 S. Fifth Ave., and when they arrived two minutes later, smoke was emitting from the eastern part of the home, and the fire was in the west end inside the bedroom.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in 14 minutes, according to the report, and the fire was contained to the west end of the home. The rest of the home suffered smoke damage. The report stated that a child warned the father of the fire and both then got out. Firefighters remained on the scene until 3:46 that morning

Thomas Linson was identified as the occupant of the home that is owned by Anthony Stevens.

The fire caused an estimated $25,000 damage to a residence valued at $50,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

This marks the third consecutive weekend that Durant has had a house fire in which the occupants escaped from the burning structure.

In other fires, firefighters responded at 5:46 p.m. Saturday to grass fire at Highway 48 and Sandstone Road. The fire burned approximately 500 feet in the area of a fence row. Firefighters put out the fire.
