A man asleep escaped a burning home Friday evening after a neighbor observed flames and knocked on the front door, according to the Durant Fire Department.
Durant firefighters were dispatched at 8:42 to 623 N. 10th Ave., and upon arrival three minutes later, flames were observed on the west side of the house, and thick smoke was coming from east side doorway and windows. According to a fire department report, a porch on the west side of the house was on fire and flames were shooting up into the home.
Firefighters ventilated the roof on the west side, and once ventilation was completed, they were able to contain the fire, bringing it under control in 21 minutes.
Wyatt Millin was the occupant of the house, according to the fire department, and the home is owned by Pete Halleck. According to a department report, Millin was asleep inside until alerted by a neighbor who banged on the door.
The house suffered severe damage from fire, smoke and heat. The home was valued at $70,000, and the fire caused $30,000 in damage to the house, plus another $10,000 damage to contents, according to the report. Firefighters remained on the scene until 11:43 that evening.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
